Project Objectives
Based upon the highlights over a five-year period of time, it is apparent that many positive advances in the implementation of special education have taken place. The actions taken have been aligned with the objectives set forth by the U.S. Special Education Advisory Committee and the Ministry of Education in Bhutan.
These objectives include assisting the Ministry of Education to:
- Establish two lead SEN school training centers in the east and west of Bhutan
- Develop Special Education Needs (SEN) Teams and resources within the SEN schools
- Develop methods to screen, identify and offer remediation to children with mild to moderate disabilities and learning difficulties so that they will receive a full education and become productive citizens
- Support the development of a strong literacy program
- Build capacity in the SEN Team and general education teachers to provide services and remediation to students with special needs
- Develop services and provide appropriate skills for students with more severe special needs
- Provide ongoing mentoring support
- Build partnerships with organizations, locally and from abroad, to assist with all aspects of Special Needs
- Create greater awareness among the public about special needs education and transition
- Provide better opportunities for lifelong learning and work for children with disabilities
- Support efforts to build early intervention and pre-school
- Support efforts to build a transition program for each stage of development
- Coordinate efforts and support collaboration amongst Stakeholders
- Support RUB and the Colleges of Education to include training on Special Education
